Hillary Seitz’s script provides a different motive for why the main character covers up his accidental shooting of his partner, and offers a more conventional ending. Nolan’s film tidies up the original movie by adding elements required by American audiences, and removing scenes that audiences would not wish to see in a popular thriller. ![]() There are enough changes to justify this remake however. Erik Skjoldbjærg’s 1997 thriller was an effectively gloomy and cynical affair that tells much the same story. One of the great achievements of Insomnia is that it is a rare example of an American remake of a European movie that does not detract from the original film. Actually the story is fairly simple, even by noir standards. It is essentially a conventional neo-noir, and no worse for that. However the narrative is relatively easy to follow. Some of these show events from earlier in the film, and some show events that occurred before the story started. ![]() There are a few flashbacks, briefly intercut into the hero’s sleepless mind. Compared to Memento, Interstellar and Inception, there are no weird twists, and no bending of time and space, though perhaps a little bending of reality. The storyline is much more straightforward. In a strange way, the qualities that often irritate people in other Nolan films are the ones that make them showy and more likely to attention. It is one of the few Nolan films not to be nominated for any awards, and one of the few that does not feature in the top 250 movies on Internet Movie Database. Insomnia is a comparatively unsung Christopher Nolan movie.
